Virginia Highlands
Always a laid-back, yet young-at-heart beehive of activity, Virginia-Highland is undeniably one of Atlanta’s most beloved in-town neighborhoods. Given its name by the intersecting streets of Virginia and North Highland, its population consists of young urban professionals, artists, empty nesters and culturally engaged families. VaHi features six clusters of trendy shops, spas and eateries such as Key Lime Pie Salon, Mitzi & Romano Clothing Boutique and The Highland Tap, an Atlanta institution for steak and ale. Places to go and things to do is never in shortage up and down North Highland Road. The “strip” was first developed in the late 1800’s when the Atlanta Railway Company streetcars ran up and down it. Virginia Highlands is bounded on the north by Amsterdam Avenue and the neighborhood of Morningside; on the east by the Atlanta city limit/Briarcliff Road and the Druid Hills neighborhood; on the south by Ponce de Leon Avenue and the Poncey Highland neighborhood; and on the west by the Beltline, which is the border of Piedmont Park and Ponce de Leon Avenue.
While ultra-modern condos are part of the landscape in this historic neighborhood, the majority of VaHi’s homes were constructed between 1909 and 1926. So, just know you can also choose from a plethora of charming Craftsman bungalows and Tudor-style homes ranging from the 300’s to $1 million+.
The community is zoned by Atlanta Public Schools with K-12 students attending Springdale Park Elementary, Inman Middle School and Henry W. Grady High School. For higher education, Emory University’s sprawling urban campus is just around the corner. The college is recognized internationally for its outstanding liberal arts college and superb professional schools. It’s also home to one of the Southeast’s leading health care systems.
As health is paramount here, the VaHi lifestyle calls for outdoor exercise. Whether it’s walking off your shrimp & grits at Murphy’s or tagging along with your Jack Russell down to San Francisco Coffee Roasting for a cup of joe, you’ll love getting out and about here. (If you love coffee, there’s also Starbucks and Aurora Coffee. ) You could run down North Highland with your marathon training group or take it over to the park on the other side of Monroe Drive. That’s where you’ll find Piedmont Park, Atlanta’s paradise in the city. 280 acres of trails, tennis courts, soccer fields, walking areas and home to the finish of the Peachtree Road Race.
