Dunwoody

The quintessential Atlanta suburban city, Dunwoody is truly at the center of it all. Located at the northern tip of DeKalb County, bounded by Fulton County on the north and west, I-285 on the south, Peachtree Industrial on the southeast and Peachtree Corners in Gwinnett County on the northeast. Rich in history, the development of Dunwoody began in the 1800’s when Roswell, Georgia native, Major Charles Dunwodyreturned after the Civil War. Dunwoody took his name from the major (adding another o). In the early 1900’s, Dunwoody’s major infrastructure consisted of a railroad and a few one room school houses. But in 1969, I-285 was built next to Dunwoody and this hidden treasure experienced a tremendous boom in growth that is carefully managed to this day.
What’s now known as “incorporated Dunwoody” is home to the areas of historic Dunwoody Village and one of America’s largest edge city’s, Perimeter Mall – not to mention an abundance of neighborhoods in Georgetown, Winters Chapel and Tilly Mill. These are mature and graceful neighborhoods to take a stroll or ride your bike over to Starbucks. Dunwoody’s loyal denizens enjoy lifestyles as varied as Dunwoody itself. Homes of all sizes and styles — brand new and gracefully aged are here for the choosing. Families can reside in an updated 4 bedroom ranch with an open floor plan in a swim/tennis community from the mid 200’s or a 4300 square foot custom built home from the mid 600’s. And why shouldn’t they?
Dunwoody is an idyllic place to raise kids with DeKalb County Schools like Austin, Chestnut Charter, Kingsley, Vanderlyn and Dunwoody Elementary. Middle and high schoolers attend Peachtree Charter and Dunwoody High respectively. Dunwoody even has Georgia Perimeter College, the third largest institution in the University System of Georgia. With more than 25,000 students, it’s also among the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan two-year colleges. Many metro Atlanta students choose to save money, live at home and study their first two years at GPC before heading off to the University of Georgia or another big 4 year university.
To get to the core of Dunwoody’s historic center, look for the Dunwoody Farmhouse near Dunwoody Village’s outdoor walking mall. Designed in a Colonial Williamsburg architectural style, much of the neighborhoods followed suit giving Dunwoody a unique architectural identity. Just down the road is the mecca of shopping and industry, Perimeter Mall. Combine the two and what you have is the best of urban and suburban living in metro Atlanta.
